Originality

I don't know why people I know seem to think I'm so original... In all honesty, a good 75% of the things I say are unoriginal. I remember reading a quote some time ago about the secret to being original was hiding one's source (I'm wanting to say that was a past president, but I'm not entirely sure, and I can't find it again). Anyways, I'm not really quite so sure where I'm trying to go with this... But my lack of originality makes me feel downright shitty. I mean, there's billions of human beings - dead and alive. The things I've felt, the things I've thought have surely been thought thousands millions, maybe even billions of times before.

I just thought I'd rant a little today, seeing as how I don't have any ideas to blog about currently, and I didn't want to post someone else's greatness. So what are your thoughts on originality, etm.?

  1. Hey not everything can be original. It just takes some creativity to make something unoriginal original.

    Definitely following.

  3. I think you are being too hard on yourself man. Originally is taking someone's idea and flavoring it with yourself. Nothing can truly be imagined in the sense you are thinking about. Like you can't imagine a new color, you can only work with what you already know. The same applies to life, being witty etc.

  4. Nothing's really original anymore. It always seems like everything's just a re-hash of some popular thing from the 80's. At least for movies. Now those infomercials that you see at 2 in the morning selling some cool new product? Those are pretty original.

Cool blog man, i'll follow you... Cause you're sooo original.

  5. Sometimes being original is just using old stuff and interpreting it differently, I've been trying to do that but I need to start making some better posts too

  6. That sounds exactly like my life. In all honesty though, most people aren't unoriginal, I know pretty much all of the stuff I sad is from TV shows or something else I've watched.

  7. Anyone can recycle a quote, but real talent is being able to express your own ideas. Not every sentence has to be a gem of wisdom or comedic gold. Just start with expressing your thoughts on things that are important to you, and the clever/thoughtful/funny parts will come naturally. The worst thing you can do is to force it.

  8. No one is original as everyone is a product of everything that have heard and respected. That said, basically everything has already been done by someone in the past. Don't let it get you down, just do what makes you happy.

  10. Try to look at the problem from other side. If there are so many people it's almost impossible to be original. So once when you really feel you thought of something new, realize how big of an achievement that is.

  11. Nice rant :) Sometimes originality can be over rated. When all else fails a good copy and paste never hurt no one :P

  13. I was listening to the wireless this morning with a guy from the band Elbow (great indie band if you like that kind of thing) going on about accidental plagiarism, and how he felt physically sick when he realised he'd subconsciously copied a line from some-one else's song. The guy he copied was cool about it and sold him the line for the price of a beer.

I think most of modern culture is a re-hash of a re-hash of a re-hash - as Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones once said "There's only one song, and Adam and Eve wrote it; the rest is a variation on a theme."

The same could be said about the internet - just an opinion...cool blog as always
(Cheers for the heads up on my comments ;-)

  15. "Originality" often is just an original way of saying something that has been said before, or mixing several ideas into one.

  17. Nice perspective. Think about it though, if no one has seen and you show them it makes you look original. Nothing wrong with that!

  18. it's all about perception. as you mention, there's many that may have said or done what you already have but someone else you may be projecting that onto may only be experiencing or seeing what you're doing for the first time.

  20. People (at least I for one) think you are original, because you definitely are. You can't be original all the time, I mean, I'm sure eventually there will be a time when something you say will have already been said. It's not like it's a bad thing. Everyone who knows you knows that you are a very original person so why not take it as a compliment?
